The Four Agreements

I am so grateful for the wonderful technologies we have access to these days.
My mother lives in France, and it’s so easy to be ‘together’ through Skype!

Ancient wisdom helps us to go deeper within, to be true, to connect with our higher self and others more authentically. Modern technologies are pushing the limits to who we communicate with and how many people we reach.
Now we shall be even more careful with the way we communicate and connect with others.
I believe our purpose is to get to know ourselves and help others know themselves. An extraordinary tool to help us in this matter is the New York Times bestseller book from Don Miguel Ruiz: The four agreements. I had the immense pleasure and honor to meet this man last January and his son Don Jose, who co-wrote the 5th Agreement with him.
It was amazing to be in there presence and feel the love that emanate from them.

I’d like to share with you these four agreements and their principles, which are based on Ancient Toltec wisdom. By applying them in our everyday life, we can change everything around us. These four agreements reminded me how the connection with nature and our true nature is important.
The Four Agreements:

Don Miguel Ruiz was born into a family of healers, raised in rural Mexico by a healer mother and a shaman grandfather. He has dedicated his life to sharing the wisdom of the ancient Toltec.
Don Miguel define the Toltec has the ‘women and man of knowledge’ throughout southern Mexico. They were scientists and artists who formed a society to explore and conserve the spiritual knowledge and practices of the ancient ones.

Don Miguel said that if we adopt these four agreementsthe transformation in our life will be amazing. “You’ll need a very strong power in order to adopt them” and live your everyday life according to them, but yes the transformation will be amazing.

The Four Agreements:

Be impeccable with your word
Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.

Don’t Take Anything personally
Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their won dream. Where you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.

Don’t Make Assumptions
Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

Always do your best
Your best is going to change from moment to moments; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret.

If you haven’t read this book, I highly recommend it. Think of these agreements and adopt them in your everyday life. It is not easy to continuously walk your talk. But if you always do your best, you’ll see some amazing results in your life. And you’ll discover who you truly are.

Llama Adventures

Nature doesn't cease to amaze me! And yesterday I went north of northern New Mexico. After a couple of hours driving along the Rio Grande, I finally arrived to our meeting place. Far far away, but what a reward to be in such beauty. The Llama were there and we begun our descent toward the Rio Grande (800 feet down...)

The terrain was pretty steep, and we have to be careful where we put our feet. Along the trail we could see a good sample of the New Mexica

n flora, junipers, ponderosa pines, yucca, sage brush.

The wonderful thing about this hike is that I didn't have to carry anything else than my camera! Thank you Diego, my companion of the day!

Wisdom from Chaco Canyon

Now, even if you stay just few hours in Chaco, you'll have the opportunity to discover a lot.

The buildings and construction are fascinating and truly amazing. This is one of the very rare sites around the world known for its building alignment being on the path of theSun course AND the path of the Moon course. The other site in the world known for this is Stonehenge in England.

This alignment, which is fascinating to witness,shows how knowledgeable the Chacoan people were, especially about astronomy.This knowledge was in fact extremely important for them, since it confirmed the cycle of the season, the time to plant and the time to harvest.
Some doors and openings are aligned in such a way, for two days in the year and two days only (at the equinox), that there is a perfect alignment for the sun to go straight through them at sunrise, without creating any shadow...Today when these alignments are measuredwith precise scientific instruments it correspondexactly to the trajectory / path of the sun and the moon.

Visiting Chaco Canyon (part1)

Imagine a large, open, arid land where you can see far, far away. You are driving for a few miles in this desert under a deep blue sky. Few disperse habitations appear with wooden houses close by. These are “Hogan”, the primary traditional home of the Navajo people.

After a long meander down a dirt road you arrive at another vast open space, you are in the Chaco Wash in the San Juan Basin.Stop before going to the visitor center to embrace this unique landscape, to give thanks to the ancient for welcoming you in this sacred place. Enter the place with an open spirit and open heart. Promise to respect this land, its history, its teachings and its wisdom. Honor and give thanks to the four directions; the East, North, West and South.

When continuing down the road you’ll see Fajada Butte, where the Sun Dagger was discovered by Anna Sofaer in 1977. Fajada means ‘belt’ or ‘band’ in Spanish. This amazing massive butte was named ‘Fajada’ by the first Spaniards because of its layer of carbonaceous shale and thin coal beds, which design a black belt around this monument.

Chaco canyon is not just a site…it is an immense area, a region, where pueblos (villages) and ceremonial sites are linked together by surprisingly long and wide roads.

In return for these amazing ‘statements’ of New Mexi

co's striking landscape, Abiquiu and its surrounding areas, where she lived are now surnamed “Georgia O’Keeffe Country”.

A well deserved recognition, asit is impossible to mention Santa Fe without talking about O’Keeffe.

The Georgia O’Keeffemuseum is dedicated to here life and her art and exhibitions change three times a year.

Collectors as well as people who are deeply touched by

her art come from all over the world

to see herpaintings and to bask in the experience of being in her paintings.

Lariane Fonseca came from Australia and took a fe

w days to visit the Georgia O’Keeffe Country with me.

This was an amazing experience, and an inspiration for me to have been in the presence of a woman who knew O’Keeffe’s art so well, who was so passionate about her with a beautiful sensitivity.

Lariane, an artist and photographer herself, made this experience exceptional for me. As I often say, my clients are my biggest inspiration! I am so grateful to be in the presence of inspiring and amazing people.

I know these landscapes andhave been around them many times. But being with someone who has such sensitivity to her environment, who is so present in the instant and so touched by the beauty of the land, made me feel as if Georgia’s spirit was with us along these two days. Her spirit was guiding us and creating the most magical moments. We were fascinated and it seemed surreal at times, wondering ourselves if we were in the paintings or in the reality!

Black and White Beauty, Black and White Mood

I recently took a client to White Sands, NM. This is one of my favorite places in NM.
It's simply a pure marvel and the largest desert of gypsum in the world.
Eun Joo is from South Korea and visiting this site was a long time dream of hers. She was about 10 years old when she saw pictures of White Sands for the very first time. Since then, she has held on to her dream and has always believed that she, one day, would visit it. She did everything she could to make her dream come true, and this day had come!

I was so happy to help

her make it true. She was such an inspiration for me!
No matter how big or far your dream seems to be, go for it!

As soon as we arrived in the White Sands area, the excitement began...
The magnificent beauty immediately uplifted our spirits. When I looked around, everyone was in a blissful mood, playing with the glistening sands, talking and sharing each o

ther's feelings.

Even though the plants are ra

re, as it is a desert, they look glorious. Especially at dusk and dawn, the color gradient is so delicate; I felt like I was immersed in a world of grace and nothing seemed to be able to take away this cheerful mood. White Sand's unique formations are the result of water's work. A million years ago heavy rains poured on the mountain made of gypsum and literally dissolved

it. This gypsum run off created Lake Lucero. The wind continued to break the lake down until it would become a fine sea of gypsum particles, which finally evolved into the smooth round dunes ever moving and creating these amazing sands patterns.

Valley of Fire, as its name indicates is the result of fire's work. The lava formed this dark site, it's flow would run up to 44 miles south from this little peak. A m

illion years after this event, the soil has become a 'paradise' for the plants and offers a very fertile ground for them to thrive.

Surprisingly they found their way into crevasses and lava cracks. Given the amount of lava still visible I was very surprised to see the diversity and quantity of plant species.

Valley of fire is a beautiful site, but I couldn't help but notice that all this black color certainly brought a different mood than White Sands. W e arrived with an uplifted and positive mind. After being around this surreal landscape and dark colors for a while, I realized that sadness and quietness were the emotions and state of mind that took over our mood.

This confirmed the importance of our environment, and how nature influences us. If you don't like the environment, you are living in, be sure to take some time to think on how you can change it. Add some lighter or brighter colors to your world, or simply colors you like. Add some plants. Give smiles to others, as you will receive them back!

I have been blessed to come to Sedona again, a sacred place; not just because of it's beauty, powerful rocks, the earth's energy and famous vortex; but also because of the wonderful people who live there or visit.
A couple of weeks ago, I helped my friend Lilou to interview a few of them.
A true journey of the heart, from the heart, in the heart of the Southwest!
Speaking about energy and rocks, I'd like to introduce to you a new teachings' series: the properties and power of gemstones.

Last year I told you about the Animal totems, how to use them and what they are teaching us. This year, I'll share with you in this newsletter the power and energies the stones, crystals and gems can give us. This is called: Lithotherapy.

The very first stone of this series is the Beautiful Turquoise.
It is a very typical stone of the Southwest. It was mined here, traded, and made into amazing jewelry.

I love this stone for its color and properties.

Navajo Turquoise, is a mixture of the turquoise stone and sard which forms the beautiful lines you see in the stones.

The combination of turquoise and sard, give you the love and connection energies from turquoise mixed with the attachments to family, home, and your roots which come from the sard. It is to help you stay in a place of love and connectedness with others so you can feel at "home" no matter where you are.

One of the main compounds of the turquoise stone is copper which gives it that amazing blue and green color. Turquoise itself is also wonderful for drawing out negative vibrations from a person. Placed by the feet, worn in a sock or shoe, turquoise draws the negativity out of the person and as it dissipates, allows the negativity to go back into the ground.

Board Breaking...in New Mexico

Last week, we did an amazing experience of going beyond our fears, and Lilou with her Juicy Living tour filmed it!

I have to say that it was awesome. We did that in the beautiful setting of Galisteo, NM. When Gwendolina arrived with the boards, I began to worry a little bit...I didn't expect it to be so thick!

But Gwen prepared us very well, and we spent some time talking and visualizing about going beyond our fears. Then the excitement began. And I couldn't wait to try.

I love the fact that Gwen had us write on the board what we were looking to achieve, and let go of. I believe this helped to break the board.

That was my first 'board-breaking' experience...and I am looking forward for the next one....and...the fire-walk!

Bring your Heart to White Sands

The first time I went to White Sands, NM it was the end of summer, and I was really amazed by this white desert. Although it is a desert and a 'moving one,'

some plants have succeeded in surviving. Yes it is moving, because as with any dune, the wind is a huge factor, and makes the landscape change and move, which of course becomes a big problem to maintain the paths and roads within this exceptional area.

Here, again, you are confronted with the immensity and the very long work of time through the landscape.

When in this desert, you are definitely inspired towards meditation and rejuvenation. If you are looking for some inspiration, it is a fabulous place to reconnect with nature and, by simply being in the moment, enjoying this unique site, immensity, and calm.

Even in the middle of the hottest summer days, when touching the sand, about ½ inch under, it is cold; the sand is such a pure white, that it deflects the sun heat.

So be careful, don't get lost and stay too late in this fascinating beauty, or the cold will get you at dusk...

The most renowned mystery of Santa Fe…. about to be unveiled.

Legend is often rooted in truth and truth in legend...

Before we enter into the chapel…we will read this sign. Everything you can read on it, is erroneous!

Loretto Chapel! No no no, but maybe “The Chapel of our Lady of Light” was a little bit too long to put on this sign. But that is its real name.
Built in 1873! Do you really think that such a sophisticate jewel could have been built in one single year? It took 5 to be completed, until 1878.

The best! Miraculous Stairway...

The legend goes… I won’t give you all the sleazy - flimsy details of the story.

But it is said that due to the murder of young Mouly, the architect of the chapel, the choir was left with no plans or drawings to figure out how access it!

The Loretto sisters begun to do what they knew best, they pray! And it worked!
After 9 days of prayers (called a novena) to St Joseph, the patron saint of the carpenters…a white bearded-man carrying a toolbox and traveling with a donkey, appear at the convent door, seeking for work… as a carpenter! What a great co incidence!

The sisters employed him immediately. The man built a two 360 degree spiral staircase, piece of art! And disappeared, without even asking to be paid for his labor!

Who wouldn’t want to know the name of such a model employee! Many begun to assure that Saint Joseph himself came to built the Miraculous Staircase, in Santa Fe!

And this... was the Legend.

And this is the object of the controversy.
What everyone agrees on, is that this is artistically evident that the 19th century craftsman who built the staircase in this chapel was a MASTER carpenter. From any angle you look at it, it’s simply magnificent

and perfect!
After many years of thorough research, Mary Straw Cook, the author of the book Loretto: The Sisters and Their Santa Fe Chapel could state with no doubts: Francois-Jean Rochas, was the talented carpenter.

The question now is: HOW did he build it? How this amazing stairway can stand withouta central axe and no nails? ...

Rochas, also known as ‘Frenchy’ seemed to have received training as a ‘compagnon’.

When I researched on the compagnon’s carpenter from his time, 19th century, these types of stairways were quiet common.

‘The compagnons du tour de France’, that’s their exact name, -

absolutely not related to the ‘actual tour de France’ that you might have heard

from - is a French organization of craftsmen and artisans dating from the Middle age, and still active today!

The young people who aspire to become a compagnon, have to take a two years course, where they learn the basic of their work, then they leave for a ‘Tour de France” which now can be all around the world, for three to five years, in different cities, and with different masters.

The knowledge is transmitted only verbally from masters to apprentice; it is kept secret because only those who deserve it can receive the knowledge.

It is not a technical knowledge only, but also the teaching of philosophy, the symbolic, and values: fraternity, equity, and appreciation of the well-done labor for the welfare of the community. Only those who can apply these values in their everyday life are worthy of the knowledge.

At the end of their ‘compagnonnage’, the student has to build a ‘model’ of EXCEPTION to show his abilities, before receiving the title of ‘compagnon’.

Even with a nice and well said legend, it’s the labor and chef d’oeuvre which really matter and which is admire centuries later. As a compagnon, I’m sure Rochas understood this. It was not about him, it was about doing something of exception for the benefice of the community. And for the little story, he did receive payment for his labor. (see pictures above from the museums of 'les compagnons du tour de France' of the 19th century.

As Benjamin Franklin said: “Well done is better than well said”.

The pure joy of one of the most beautiful world's wonders: White Sands

White Sands is the largest desert of gypsum in the world, but above all it is one of the world's great wonders! All this white gives you a sense of pure joy, euphoria (a mental and emotional state defined as a profound sense of well being).

This is such a fascinating area, it seems that everyone entering this amazing place, leave any sadness at the entrance. Just like the snow often bring excitement, white sands give you joy and excitement, without the cold. You can play for hours in this immense 'sandbox' until sunset....then it turn itself as such a beauty, you'll be in awe! What was blue and white so far turn multicolored, with pink, orange, red colors, it is simply fascinating to watch and hard to turn away from it.

Early morning and late afternoon are definitely the best time to witness this pure beauty and immerse yourself into this inspiring desert. The shadows of the dunes gives you more relief.

If you go with your kids, (or just want to retrieve your inner child...) bring or purchase a luge (a small one- or two-person sled) and enjoy the play area...

We celebrated Thanksgiving with a lot of fun around the heart of Santa Fe (the Santa Fe plaza’s surname as many discovered) discovering its history, stories and beauties, as well as how cold Santa Fe can be!

The Santa Fe Trail...On the road to our roots

The Santa Fe Trail was one of the first commercial roads trough the West and played a huge role in the development of the Wild West. The first wagons began to head west in 1821 and the traffic increased steadily until 1879. When the Railroad reached the area it became easier, faster and more secure to travel west.

The Santa Fe Trail started in Franklin, Missouri and ended in Santa Fe, New Mexico; it went through Kansas, Colorado (the Mountain route) or Oklahoma (the Cimarron route) and New Mexico.

Spanning 900 miles between Franklin, MO and Santa Fe, NM the trail brought tog ether diverse cultures that cooperated most of the times and clashed sometimes. One sure thing is that it changed forever the life of the Indian people from the Plains.

If early encounters were peaceful, it changed rapidly with the increase of traffic.

The trail was a vital trading route for commercial goods and later military supplies.

Textile and hardware were the main products brought to the West while silver and mules were heading East.

When I look around me, I feel blessed and grateful for everything I have, the friends who are in my life, for my daughter and husband, and for all the wonderful opportunities to travel, to experience life, and to witness beauty through incredible landscape.
This year I worked closely with a mentor who guided me to look deep into myself. Honestly, this was a tough road and I didn’t always like what I discovered.
It required a lot of work, discipline and efforts to change. But it also showed me that I have strength and courage I didn’t suspect. It helped me to find resources within myself, to acknowledge all the wonders around me in my everyday life. And most important I became more sensitive to my surroundings. I discovered that during the three days I was around Gallup, Window Rock and Canyon de Chelly. We went to few sacred sites, and I could feel the energy of the sites, which was an amazing experience.
When confronted to these sites, I can feel an immense respect for it, a deep peace in front of their beauty and all the past history; I felt a deep connection with this environment.

It’s really important to live each moment of our life as a gift, I’m sure you are familiar with Eleanor Roosevelt’s quote: “ Yesterday is history, tomorrow is mystery, today is a gift,that’s why we call it present!”
We tend too often to rush, and be anxious about the future or for things that have not yet happen. How many ‘precious moments’ in our life do we let pass by, and miss because we are not fully present in the instant?

How many people do I cross hiking, who are rushing towards the destination.

“Too often we are so preoccupied with the destination, we forget the journey.” We should savor each moment of our life. The best way to enjoy the most of it is to become aware of our surroundings, notice the animals we encounter, the elements we come across, wind/air, earth, fire, and water.

Water is an incredible natural element that can make us change our plans…when it’s pouring rain for instance!
During the three days I spent in the Navajo country, I never saw so much water! Yes for New Mexico and Arizona it’s pretty unusual. I was really amazed to witness that. All the Native Americans people I met consider this as a real blessing (which it is!), because water is the symbol of life.

In New Mexico and especially around Santa Fe (more specifically in Santa Clara and San Ildefonso’s Pueblos) you find many potteries that are decorated with ‘Avanyu’. This design is used often, because it symbolizes the importance of the water in this high desert altitude. ‘Avanyu’ is most of the time represented with its tongue as an arrow, which represent the lightning.
And lightning represent the power of nature, something we should never forget about!

Rain or Sun we should enjoy every day, because everyday is a journey!

By connecting with our environment we reconnect with our inner wisdom, with our true nature, we

can then… unleash our full potential to create the life we want! Do you want to know how?

Let me tell you a little bit about myself and how I became so passionate about helping others to get connected with nature, our environment and their inner wisdom.
After many years of working in the corporate world as a landscape designer, I realized I was doing more and more technical design and computer work, and being less often outside where I had a very special connection with nature. I began to feel miserable but most importantly, I knew that I was moving away from who I truly am, my purpose, and my passions.

A defining moment happened when… I had to get an emergency surgery, and some complication forced me to stay at the hospital (for the first time in my life) for a week. As soon as I came back to work, I knew I had to change my life. I had to take action and follow my heart.
I quit my job, sold my furniture, and hit the road towards the west…not knowing exactly what I was going to do, except reconnect with who I am.
This journey enabled me to meet experts in a variety of fields who taught me to trust my own instinct and live with passion.

The day I decided to apply the principles I learned, everything in my life unfolded. After few months of reconnecting with nature and my purpose, I created Travel Heart, which combines my passion for travel and being around stunning landscapes with my desire for continuous learning, personal growth, and deepening inner wisdom while sharing and helping others.

I have since made a commitment to dedicate the rest of my professional life to sharing with others the power of nature and the wisdom of experts, so that they too can live with joy and passion and to connect with their own wisdom.

Lets get connected!

Why? Because every action we do, has an impact on each other, on the earth, on our future and on the future of the earth.
Let’s reconnect with our environment, the nature but also anything that surrounds us. As the Lakota say: Mitakuye Oaysin; we are ALL related! We are all ONE! The plants, the Earth, the stones, the air,the animals and us humans.

Native Americans have based most of their values and philosophy on the lessons they learned from ‘Mother Earth’.
What better example than the philosophy of the Zia tribe, represented in our New Mexican flag, by the Zia sun?

A very simple symbol yet, meaningful and powerful.

The Zia sun reflects the wealth of spiritualism, teaching the basic harmony of all things in the universe.

Four is a sacred number for Indians and it embodies the Earth and its four main directions, the year with its four seasons, the day (Sunrise, noon, afternoon and sunset), life and its four division: childhood, youth, manhood and old age. The circle of life and love, which has no end and no beginning, binds all this.

The Zia believe, too, that in this great brotherhood of all things, man has four sacred obligations: he must develop a strong body, a clear mind, a pure spirit, and a devotion to the welfare of his people.

I believe these four obligations create harmony and balance in our life.

When we are balanced we can easily reach out and get connected with everything around us, remember how the animals we encounter teach us lessons or deliver us messages? (See my newsletter on the power of the animal totems)

No matter where you live, you are surrounded by nature. Yes even in New York City. As soon as warm days are here, many New Yorkers are rushing towards Central Park, and lay down on the grass. And Manhattan is an Island, surrounded by water! What a powerful element!

And nature, it’s the wind, the air, the rain, the snow, and the sun. I am sure that each of these elements brings a feeling within you. Do you feel sad when it’s pouring rain? Sometimes even angry because it ruined your hair, or you are soaked to your bones and cold? Don’t you love to feel a cool breeze on your face on a hot summer day?

Snow brings the cold, yet doesn’t it make you smile to watch the kids shouting their excitement and playing with this light white powder? And building snow men?

So it is not a matter of “I don’t have much nature around me”, yes you do. Now, what is the connection between Nature AND Wisdom?

Native Americans were wise enough to observe nature, to celebrate it, to honor it and respect it. Because they know that we can’t control nature (although we try hard!). They understand that nature needs the seasons to rejuvenate itself, and that we need the youth as much as we need the old age.

One definition of wisdom is a deep understanding of people, things, events or situations, empowering the ability to choose or act to consistently produce the optimum results with a minimum of time and energy,

By becoming aware of everything that surrounds us, and how it makes us feel, we are connecting to our environment, and when we know that everything is related, we chose our actions carefully. We become wise!

It is the same with our human environment; some of our relationships make us feel miserable, unworthy, disempowered, sad or angry.

Listen to your heart; you know who you are within yourself, as soon as you let go of a toxic relationship, beautiful ones will arrive in your life. Your life will unfold. Because you are reconnecting with who you are, because you are honoring yourself, because you are respecting yourself, and because you are now taking care of yourself.

Native Americans understood early, that we are ONE, we are deeply connected with everything around us, we are part of Nature.

By reconnecting with ‘Mother nature’ and our environment, we are retrieving our true nature, we are releasing an amazing energy, and so we attract the same. We are ready to create our life and to become all we can be.

How to use the power of the animal totems?

The animal totems are guides, teachers, they are signs or symbols in our life.

The Native Americans believe that we all have many animal totems walking through our life. Each animal has many lessons and teachings for us. For simplicity I highlight mostly one each time. But feel free to give more meaning or research on one specific animal that ‘speaks’ to you.

This is the way that I use the animal totems in my life; I become super vigilant about my surroundings and my environment, if I go on a hike and see an unusual bird, I would take the time to observe it. In Native American Culture, birds are often a symbol of freedom or a messenger. What’s going on in your life? Do you need to break free from an overwhelmed life?

From a toxic relationship? From a place you don’t like? Do you need to take some space, and have a more elevated and global vision? (contrary to the mouse, which is asking you to pay attention to details, or is warning you about paying too much attention to details...!)

The message might be that an opportunity is coming your way, so pay attention to the signs and to what is happening in your life and to what people are telling you.

Is a Butterfly flirting with you? Or asking for your attention? The butterfly is a symbol of transformation. Life is about cycles; cycles of the earth, with its seasons, days and nights, the cycle of life and its different ages; childhood, youth, manhood and old age. Maybe you need to take an important decision in your life, maybe you are inspired to write a new song or to write a book which will affect another person’s life…

The last time I was in Chaco Canyon, I had an extraordinary encounter with the most beautiful lizard. I was fascinated by it. It took me about fifteen minutes to finally leave it behind.

I realized that Lizard is the messenger of the dreams, so I paid special attention to my dreams for the few following nights. In general barely remember my dreams generally. Three nights after this encounter I had a really meaningful dream, I noted it, then many things begin to make sense and huge breakthrough happened!

Last year a very unusual spider kept coming into my life, by the kitchen window (hard not to see her!) Again although I am not a big lover of spiders… This one fascinated me. Spiders are weavers, and a symbol of creativity; they urge you to get creative and create your life just like they create their webs… Last year I was developing Travel Heart and needed to be extremely creative, I took the appearing of Miss Spider as a reminder and as an encouragement.

Chaco Canyon, a sacred place!

We went to Chaco Canyon, in June, our visit was extraordinary. First because the site is exceptional! It is a sacred place. I think anybody can feel the energy which is there, but also the connection with the ancient and their wisdom. And then because we accomplish few things we didn't know it was possible!

For some it was getting up at 5:30AM to witness the beauty of the sunrise and experience the peace of this moment, and enjoying it!

For others it was climbing vertical rocks to go from the bottom of the canyon to the top of the Mesa, which was widely rewarded with stunning views and encounter!

For some it was hiking under very hot temperatures, and with no shade whatsoever.

Whatever the challenge was Chaco Canyon is an experience by itself, that continues long after you left the canyon (yes it's that powerful).

Chaco was also a center of cosmology, and a place of ceremonies, if you take the time to 'sink' into this sacred place, the place will 'sink' into you...

Walking through the streets of Santa Fe is walking through History.
Each street has stories to tell. Some buildings still hold their secrets behind their walls. Some were the houses of famous personalities and some were the gathering places of unscrupulous affluent residents…

Palace Avenue was the home of the building to welcome all the scientists hired to work on the Manhattan project…1943…yes the project to develop the secret weapons laboratory.

Billy the Kid… yes the famous outlaw of the Southwest was once a resident of on San Francisco Street, where…the jail stood!

Burro Alley, you can’t miss it with its steel burro guarding the entrance! Was once the main trading place of Santa Fe, and also famous for its gambling house owned and managed by the famous (or infamous) La Dona Tules…Interesting character of Santa Fe, if you want to read more about her, Barbara recommends: The wind leaves no Shadows written by Ruth Laughin.

The Plaza: besides being the heart and center of Santa Fe the Plaza was the end of the journey from the Santa Fe Trail (a 19th-century transportation route through central North America that connected Missouri with Santa Fe, NM) and the Camino Real (The Royal Road - an historic road that went from Mexico City to Santa Fe, New Mexico).
Today, the Plaza is a National Historic Landmark and the gathering place for unique events like the renowned Indian Market and Spanish Market.

The Plaza is also the setting of the oldest public building in the US, the Palace of the Governors, where many Indian vendors sell their arts and jewelry under its portal.

From the Plaza few streets will lead you to very interesting churches: the cathedral basilica of St Francis de Assisi built from the plan of the cathedral of Clermont Ferrand (France), the Loretto Chapel, built from the plan of the Ste Chapelle (Paris, France), and St Miguel Mission, the oldest church built in the US in 1610, by the Tlaxcalan Indians of Mexico.
Many shops surround the Plaza where you can find all kinds of ‘souvenirs’, arts, Native American jewelry, and southwestern clothing.

If you are into Art, let me take you to Lincoln Street, where there are three stunning galleries featuring of Native American artists.

Washington Street is the address of the libraries, the public library and the History library: Fray Angelico Chavez History library, on the opposite side of this library you can admire the Inn of the Anasazi, and its very fine architectural style which combines the pueblo style with the Spanish style. This type of architecture is found a little bit all over Santa Fe, but this building is particularly nice.

Then walk up to Canyon Road, which is the ‘street of the Art’. You can spend hours strolling along this most charming street and wandering in the exclusive galleries’ gardens, before taking a break for lunch, dinner or tea and you’ll have the choice of few places for that, right on Canyon Road.

One Gallery-boutique is definitely worth the detour: Nathalie Home.
Nathalie is known for her exquisite taste in all things western, and you will find also beautiful Navajo jewelry, as well as buckle sets and a one of the kind cowboy boot collection.

You can’t miss Paseo de Peralta (Don Diego de Peralta was the third governor of New Mexico), this street almost forms a beltway around the Downtown area, and will lead you to major places like the New Mexico State Capitol (the only round Capitol building in the US), the Farmers Market where you’ll find exclusively products from New Mexico, Site Santa Fe, a contemporary Art Space.

There are so many more other interesting streets to walk around in Santa Fe. You need to come and I’ll guide you…

What is a Pow Wow ?

Pow Wow time is the Native American people's way of meeting together, to join in dancing, singing, visiting, renewing old friendships and make new ones.

This is a time to renew thought of the old ways and to preserve a rich heritage.
There are several different stories of how the Pow Wow was started. Some believe that the war dance societies of the Ponca and other Southern Plains tribes were the origin of the Pow Wow.

Another belief is that when the Native Americans were forced onto reservations the government also forced them to have dances for the public to come and see. Before each dance they were lead through the town in a parade, which is the beginning of the Grand Entry.

Pow Wow singers are very important figures in the Native American culture. Without them there would be no dancing. The songs are of many varieties, from religious to war to social.

As various tribes gathered together, they would share their songs, often changing the songs so singers of different tribes could join. With these changes came the use of "vocables" to replace the words of the old songs. Thus, some songs today are sung in vocables with no words.

Yet they still hold special meaning to those who know the song. Many songs are still sung in native tongue either newly composed or revivals of old songs. These songs are reminders to the Indian people of their old ways and rich heritage.

Dancers have always been a very important part of the life of the American Indian. Most dancers seen at Pow Wows today are social dances which might have had different meanings in earlier days. Although dance styles and content have changed, their meaning and importance has not. The outfits worn by the dancers, like the styles of clothing today evolve over time, it is not a stagnant culture, but a vibrant and changing way of life.

Pow Wow are organized by committees that work for weeks before the event. At the Pow Wow, the MC runs the events. The MC works with the Arena Director to keep the Pow Wow organized and running smoothly. These two individuals along with the committee work hard to bring the people together to dance and fellowship together in the circle.

The Pow Wow begins by the Grand Entry. This is the entry of all the people entering the arena. This originally was a parade through the town the Pow Wow was in. Even today in some Pow Wows, these parades are still held. During the Grand Entry, everyone is asked to stand as the flags are brought into the arena. The flags carried generally include the US flag, tribal flags, POW flag, and eagle staffs of various tribes present. These are usually carried by veterans. Native Americans hold the United States flag in an honored position despite the horrible treatment received from this country. The flag has a dual meaning. First it is a way to remember all of the ancestors that fought against this country. It is also the symbol of the United States which Native Americans are now a part. The flag here also reminds people of those people who have fought for this country.

Following the veterans are other important guests of the Pow Wow including tribal chiefs, Princesses, elders, and Pow Wow organizers. Next in line are the men dancers. The men are followed by the women dancers. Once everyone is in the arena, the song ends and a song is sung to honor the flag and the veterans. After a prayer, the dancing resumes, usually with a few Round Dances. After the Round Dances, intertribal dancing songs are sung and everyone dances to the beat of the drum.

The Gila Wilderness

Pristine mountains, forest, rangeland and protected desert; this is the Gila National Forest.

This area is fascinating for its changing landscape; you pass through steep mountains and luscious forests of Spruce, Douglas fir, Aspens, Oaks and Cactus. And suddenly you are in a rich plain where pronghorn are grazing. The hot Springs are extremely pleasant and so welcome after a long day of hiking and discovery!

Gila was the first US wilderness area, established in 1924.

The Gila Mountains and forest were home to the Chiricahua Apache people. Legendary leader Geronimo was born in the 1820's by the Gila River, and with other Apache leaders, the Chiricahua Apaches joined forces to drive all intruders out of their lands.

Gila forest is also well known for the Cliff dwellings built by the Mogollon people during the 13th century (see did you know?)

Mogollon people were hunters and farmers. Many rooms of the cliff dwellings were used for food storage, and are found at the deeper end of the cliff dwellings.

Gila National Forest, is a paradise for horseback riding, with its thousands of unspoiled mountains and forest. And I strongly suggest that you experience it from an Apache perspective, with a Native American guide extensively experienced in horseback riding and backpacking expeditions.

If you want to visit off the beaten path and be surrounded by stunning landscapes, history, and have an opportunity to learn about Native American culture, come to this beautiful area. Gila National Forest is located in the Southwest of New Mexico, and is one of the wonders of this "land of enchantment!"

Sedona - A Dream Trip

The rock formations shine in coral shades, flamingo pink, bronze, purple and burgundy depending on the time of day. The vivid colors of "red rock country" are due to iron content in the sandstone and limestone.
The first nomadic Indians felt a spiritual connection with these picks, especially with the Boynton Canyon, a sacred place to the Navajo, Apache Yavapai and Hopi.

Located between the parched south of Arizona and the mountains surrounding Flagstaff, Sedona has always attracted people who are turning to spirituality. Who does not feel admiration and fear in emerging from a spring blizzard, from the National 89A, to find 1.8 billion years of erosion?

At the end of Oak Creek Canyon, a panorama of red hills, sheer cliffs and peaks opens like a diorama revealing the earth’s past - which recalls how the forces of nature are powerful, so powerful that some say places like Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock and Airport Mesa channel and amplify the energy coming from inside the Earth. The Indians saw in these places the gates of the spiritual world.

New Agers have coined the term "Vortex" to design these energy locations deemed to facilitate prayer, meditation and healing.

The Dance

I am in love with the Southwest! As you know, the landscape is really stunning, but I admire the native wisdom, and I am fascinated by Indian culture.

‘Western man’ has usually perceived Native Americans Ceremonies as beautiful, and everyone is very respectful of them. Behind these Indian ceremonies, there are many true values and a culture which reflects a wonderful philosophy which has been maintained and celebrated in exactly the same ways for hundreds of years. (See ‘Philosophy’ from Tom Bahti)

Each pueblo has its own Dances and Ceremonies. Although these occur at a regular calendar date, it is important to always inquire about the actual date and time.

Each ceremony celebrates and calls for something important within Indian beliefs, and most of them, if not all, are in connection with nature, earth, sky, animals, plants, rain, sun etc…(the turtle dance, celebrated at Ohkay Owingeh and Taos pueblos, calls for renewal, regeneration, and the continuing process of creation)

Hunting ceremonies not only honored the animals but also ensured their propagation The Buffalo and Deer dance of San Ildefonso Pueblo is particularly moving.
The ceremony begins the night before with firelights on the plaza of the Pueblo, to guide the animals to the village. At dawn, a group of Drums calls the animals from the hills surrounding the pueblo.
This is fascinating, listening to the rhythms of the drums and the songs. When several drums are playing together, it’s so powerful that the vibrations sink into your body and resonate within you, a sensation that could last long after the drums stop playing.
Then suddenly, you’ll see smoke coming up from behind the hill, and there they appear…first you see only the figure, and the very distinctive antlers, coming from the East with the sun rising. Then you begin to distinguish the entire body and movements. Very delicately, gently, deer are coming down the hill.

What fascinates me with these dances is that the dancer/”interpreter” is so much imbued with the animal spirit, that you don’t see the dancer, and you feel the energy of the animal; the deer and its gentleness and elegance, the buffalo and its power, the eagle flying- they are light and imposing at the same time.

I realize how much these ceremonies are important in the perpetuation of traditions and culture. Robert Mirabal (see my Newsletter title Magic through Music) said: “I visited many cultures and I think it is the dance that keeps them alive and keeps them together”.
I agree with him. Coming back from one of these dances, I was thinking of how ‘commercial’ and meaningless many of the western celebrations seem to have become, and how we have even lost the true meaning or spirit.
When coming to the Southwest, inquire about those ceremonies and take the time to attend them; you will feel the sacred, the connection between the past and the present, between all things, man and animals, plants and earth.
Bring the drums' "rhythms" back with you within your heart, to celebrate meaningfully all events.

Sedona & Carl Schnebly arrived in Sedona in 1901. Carl saw the need for a mail Service and applied to the government in 1902 for a post office. He suggested naming it 'Schnebly Station', which was too long for a Stamp cancellation. His brother suggested using Carl's wife's first name: Sedona. The name stayed.
Before the town was named Sedona, the area was referring to as: Red Rock neighborhood.

Sedona, red town, spiritual town....!

Located in central Arizona and about two hours south of the Grand Canyon, Sedona is one of the jewels of the United States. Travelers discovering this city for the first time are really amazed.

Sedona is nestled in Oak Creek Canyon. Its richness resides in the red landscapes and high energy of its vortexes.
The rock formations shift their color shades from red coral, pink, golden brown, and burgundy depending on the time of the day. Colors are striking due to iron in the sandstone and limestone rock.

Some rocks are named after their shape: Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, Coffee Pot.

These extraordinary old red rocks, (1.8 billion years) are the result of sedimentation and erosion. Sedona has been completely covered by an ocean several times. It is not uncommon to find sea shells while hiking.

Some of these places are filled with a channeled and amplified energy. These sites are called 'vortexes'. These vortexes are said to enhance meditation, prayer, visualization, inspiration and creativity.

Surrounded by beauty: Abiquiu

Abiquiu is located north west of Santa Fe, NM.

While we were watching Europe and the East coast dealing with 'El Nino' and an unusual amount of snow and storms, New Mexico was waiting for more snow to fully enjoy our ski resorts!

Meanwhile this gave us the opportunity to share a ride with my friends Fred and Sol in a stunning and inspiring landscape.

We went horseback riding last week in Georgia O'Keeffe country. Breathtaking views, petroglyphs, and nice company. Abiquiu is an area that I especially like and where you can easily rejuvenate.

New Mexico is said to be “the land of enchantment”, and it takes on all its meaning when you are in Abiquiu. This land and the surrounding area are absolutely gorgeous, magical! You feel the sacred of Mother Earth.

The shape of the mesa, the hills, and the colors, everything is inspiring.
It inspired many painters; Georgia O’Keeffe is the most well known. In fact, it is difficult not to talk about Georgia O’Keeffe when talking about Abiquiu and vice versa.

O'Keeffe was fond of this landscape and painted it many times, especially ‘the Cerro Pedernal’. She even wrote to her friend that: ”God told her that if she painted it enough, he would give it to her” – Her ashes were scattered on its top.

For those who do not know Georgia O’Keeffe well, do not miss the museum dedicated to her in Santa Fe. She is a major American artist, and this museum pays her a beautiful tribute.

Abiquiu includes a reservoir that creates a lake and enhances the view of the beautiful surroundings. It became a recreation area where many come to enjoy themselves during the warm months of summer.

During winter, horseback riding in the area is extremely enjoyable. It feels like you are blending with nature, being one with the horse among such beauty. Whether you are an artist or not, you can’t help but be inspired.

There are many hikes in the Abiquiu area, short or long and strenuous, there is something for everyone. You can also spend a few days there just relaxing and reconnecting with this sacred nature.

Ghost Ranch is a famous retreat and educational center where you can stay. This site was once a hiding place for two men who stole horses. To be sure nobody would come there, they spread the word that ghosts haunted this place. The name stuck!

Magic Through Music

What a terrific evening! On a Sunday evening we went with some friends listening to Robert Mirabal a flute maker and flute player, native of Taos Pueblo and two times Grammy awards!

I am writing this note listening to his music to retrieve the spirit of this magic evening.
We met with my friends Dorota and Denise, here in the picture are the three of us!
I was so excited, inspired and in admiration of this man!

The energy that radiates from him is very special. It is powerful and very soft at the same time. His messages are beautiful; you feel his love, passion and pride for his heritage and culture and his enthusiasm for sharing it all.

This is such a perfect example of success in following your heart and passion. I wish that all of you will be able to deeply connect with your own talent, passion, and that each of you has your purpose that you need to share with the rest of us. Please do.
Like Wayne Dyer said: "Don't die with your music inside".

Whatever your passion or talent is, share it with the world.
Following this inspiring evening we found a 'motto' for this 2010 New Year that we decided to live up to: Be Fearless!

Chimayo Rug, few wonders of New Mexico!

Last week I met an extremely talented weaver, but what impressed me the most was his passion for his art, his cultural and familial heritage.
Irvin Trujillo has been awarded the National Heritage Fellowship. I was very touched by his work, the Rugs he's weaving are just stunning, and he is so passionate that when I asked him question, he answered with many details, and talked to me about his heritage, showed me the wool he dye himself during spring time. (Beautiful shade of colors!)
This National Heritage Fellowship is well deserved! congratulation Irvine.
I've included a visit of his Studio and and shop in my 'Sacred Tour' and the client I took there this week where also deeply impress by his work and his very nice personality and character.

Below is an interview with Mary Eckstein, to get to know this great man.

NEA: First of all, congratulations on your award. Could you tell me how you felt when you heard the news?

MR. TRUJILLO: I knew that my name was in the running, but I didn't expect to get the scholarship. I was really excited.

NEA: Tell me about your earliest memories weaving. Why were you attracted to the tradition, and who were your teachers and mentors?

MR. TRUJILLO: My Dad was my first mentor. After my sister went to college he put his big loom in her bedroom and when he'd come home from work he'd weave. I was watching TV all the time, and heard all this racket in the back room, so I went back there to see what he was doing. I started to watch him and after a while he asked if I wanted to try. He put a little chair alongside him next to the loom so that I could move the spools. I wasn't tall enough to reach the loom. After probably about two nights weaving with him, he said, "I think you know the stitches, do you want to weave on your own?" And I said, "Sure." So he set me up a small loom that would weave 20 inch wide material.

When I first started I did a big striped piece. I did my second piece with my sister's name in it and gave it to her. I put my own name in the next piece. By planning the letters to go on the piece, I began to learn how to plan a design. Then I started to take commissions from friends for pieces with their names.

Lisa, my wife, learned how to weave after we got married and she has been instrumental as a peer. We would critique each other's pieces after we got them off the loom. Whenever my dad or my wife or I would finish a piece, we'd put it on the floor, and then everybody would say, "Oh, I really like this," or "I really like this." We helped each other to learn. And I studied privately with Jean Pierre LaResert, a French weaver out of Berkley who taught me the French technique. I also took a workshop from Archie Brennon, a world renowned weaver from England. From him I learned how to make the alphabet on five threads, as opposed to on a 20 inch piece. He really taught me to look at the detail of the relationship of each thread to the next.

NEA: You're a seventh generation weaver. I was wondering if you felt you were destined to become a weaver because of family tradition?

MR. TRUJILLO: After I wove as a child, I went on to other things. I really like drawing. When I was in college, I studied engineering, and went to work as an engineer. One day I was sitting at a desk with a window and I was looking out at another building that was taller than mine, and I realized I really couldn't do that for 30 years. I really don't like to be cooped up in a room that has no windows or air. I like the freedom Chimayo offers. When I told my dad that I wanted to start a business, he said, "Well, it's going to be hard, but if you have the money, you can start your business." I wanted to stay in New Mexico, and particularly in Chimayo, where my grandparents and my great grandparents live. It was very beautiful there -- I had lots of green trees, and in New Mexico green's pretty rare, because you need water. And one of the things that I worked at was water resources, and I understood the value of water in New Mexico. So I came back to work on preserving the water rights as well as weave, and to make a life in Chimayo

NEA: I know you combine ancient weaving traditions with more contemporary innovations. What goes into the inspiration for a new piece?

MR. TRUJILLO: I studied a lot of museum pieces and pretty much learned the old designs by observation. I didn't actually weave pieces with the old styles -- it was my father's philosophy that I should weave a new design for each piece, and in doing that develop a vocabulary in design. I learned through experience. And so I started incorporating various techniques. I tried different things, and, you know, some failed, some succeeded.

I have tried to have my work reflect the times in which I live. What I wanted to do was put themes that were important to my life. As an engineer, for example, when the first space shuttle crashed, it was very humbling at a technical level that it failed, so I did a piece reflecting that. And after my mother and father died, I wove a depression piece for a whole year. I wove a piece that documented the robbery of Chimayo's only bank. In the ‘80's there was a boom in Santa Fe called the Santa Fe Style which had coyotes howling up to the moon and stuff like that. I didn't really want to do that, but there were a lot of tours coming to our studio at that time, and so I kind of documented whether I was in it for the money or whether I was in it for the weaving.

One of the things that I really worked on was putting in Ikat, which is an Indonesian technique that usually used the weft of the piece into a broken weft background. In other words, breaking the weft into the Ikat technique and tapestry technique, which is combining two techniques into one piece. I've asked a lot of dealers -- there aren't that many pieces in the world that have that combination. It's just a different way in combining an old technique with the technique that I knew.

But it's hard to come up with an idea. After I finish a large piece, I usually I do some simple work and I get to soak in what I've learned from the previous piece. And when I start the next piece, I'm getting an idea of what I want to do. A lot of times I'll have to look in books, magazines, movies, any kind of media, visual media, that I might get an idea from. Then maybe I'll combine different ideas together in one piece. I've named pieces after pieces of music. I've generated random numbers from a computer, assigned a color to a number, and then woven the piece. I do a lot of sketches, and I took one and scanned it into the computer and started working in Photoshop, changing colors to see how the colors would work together. When I finally got something that I liked, then I had to dye the yarn to match the piece, and this has kind of tested my dying skills. I was able to do it and I was very happy with that idea. I've studied everything from Japanese anime to Walt Disney movies. Ideas just can come from anywhere.

NEA: How important is it to you to pass on the tradition of weaving through teaching and the pieces you create?

MR. TRUJILLO: My dad used to say that you can teach somebody, but what they do with what you teach is up to the person. I really took that to heart. One of the things that I wanted to do that he didn't was to come up with pieces that would in themselves teach or give ideas to future weavers. One of the things that we're doing is creating a database of all the pieces that go through the studio. We have pieces documented starting in about 1982, and we have these pieces on a disk. We have some slides before the computer graphics really got into shape.

The classes I've taught have been mostly in Ikat technique. I've taught a design course. I've also taught professional development. When people learn the art and technique of weaving, they have a hard time making a living as a weaver. So I'll teach the weaving basics and then talk about taking an order, taking a commission, what to look out for, things like that.

My wife has written a book based on conversations that I had with my relatives in Spanish about the weaving industry. We recorded those conversations and I translated them into English trying hard to preserve a feeling of the words and the context. We hired a ghost writer to develop a narrative of those stories and Lisa wrote sections on the weaving styles. The book is a real way of learning how the industry developed up to my father's generation. In other words, there were things that happened that influenced the changes, and in documenting that I was documenting the history of my family's weaving.

When I was growing up there weren't that many books on Hispanic weaving. There were many books on Navaho weaving, which I looked at. But I always wondered why there weren't any Spanish books. I had a lot of shame about my tradition because there wasn't very much to look at. It wasn't until 1976 that the museum published a book [on Hispanic weaving] and I got to see old pieces, which sparked my mind to doing this.

In addition to teaching here in the studio, I have apprentices. I've had people who have had a second grade education, people with a sixth grade education, and I've taught them how to weave and the basics of designing.

NEA: What advice do you have for young weavers?

MR. TRUJILLO: Learn from each piece. Try something different in each piece. Research other traditions and try to incorporate them.

NEA: What has kept you weaving throughout all these years?

MR. TRUJILLO: I don't know. That's a hard one. Part of it is that I have to work -- I have kids, and I need to make a living. But more importantly, it's the enjoyment of being able to work at what I like. There have been hard times when we didn't have money to pay bills, couldn't even take my kids to McDonalds. I've experienced what it's like to have very little money, and I've experienced having more money. What keeps me going is perseverance. I just really want to accomplish something here, in my work, and try to make it a valuable tradition.

Weaving is a wonderful art. I consider it an art form, which it may not be considered in art schools. I think it's a means of expressing ideas in the same a way that painting, sculpture, or photography can. It's important for me to keep learning and expressing what I've learned.

The buffalo reminds us to give thanks for what we have, to respect all life forms and to honor the integrity of our own divine essence. It is a symbol of equality, sacrifice and service and can show us how to live in a state of understanding, acceptance and joy.
Buffalo is a powerful medicine to have and serves as a stepping stone towards healing our imperfections and reconnection with mother earth and father sky.

Well after the extraordinary pure beauty of White Sands above ground, not far from Carlsbad Caverns, let’s dive…underground. A new world is opening in front of us. It is sometimes oppressive to be underground, space is limited, there’s no natural light, and it’s so easy to get confronted here BY our fears, especially if you are claustrophobic. So will you let your little voice and your brain govern you? Or will you step forward to face the amazing beauty and natural work of Mother Nature?

This is how Carlsbad Caverns is described:

“ ... a limestone cavern known as the Carlsbad Cave, of extraordinary proportions and of unusual beauty and variety of natural decoratio

n; ... beyond the spacious chambers that have been explored, other vast chambers of unknown character and dimensions exist; ... the several chambers contain stalactites, stalagmites, and other formations in s

uch unusual number, size, beauty of form, and variety of figure as to make this a cavern equal, if not superior, in both scientific and popular interest to the better known caves ... ”

There are more than 300 known caves beneath the surface. The park contains 116 of these caves, formed when sulfuric acid dissolved the surrounding limestone, cre

ating some of the largest caves in North America.

Beyond the beauty of these caves, there are great teachings. First in its formation, obviously it t

akes hundreds and hundreds of years to create these stalactites and stalagmites of limestone, from drop after drop. (Average growth rate of a stalactite is 0.13 mm

(0.005 Inches) a year). So it gives us an interesting approach of time.

We as 21^st century humans are running after time, so often. We are afraid of not having e

nough time…but how do we utilize this time, which is given to us? Do we use it to create beauty and harmony around us? Can we look at these caverns of splendor as an inspiration to create beauty and harmony in our life?

Another teaching comes with the story of the discovery of the caves:

White Sands the pure marvel of New Mexico

Rising from the heart of the Tularosa Basin is one of the world's great natural wonders - the glistening white sands of New Mexico. Here, great wave-like dunes of gypsum sand have engulfed 275 square miles of desert and created the world's largest gypsum dune field.

First time I went to white sand, it was the end of summer, and I was really amazed by this white desert. Although it is a desert and a ‘moving one’ some plants succeed to survived. Yes it is moving like with any dune, the wind is a huge factor, and make the landscape changed and moved, which of course become a big problem to maintain the paths and roads within this exceptional area.

Here, again you are confronted to the immensity and the very long work of time through the landscape.

When in this desert, you are definitely called for meditation and rejuvenation. If you are looking for some inspiration, it is a fabulous place to reconnect with nature and , by simply be in the moment, enjoying this unique site, immensity, and calm.

Even in the middle of the hottest summer days, when touching the sand, about ½ inch under, it is cold; the sand is such a pure white, that it deflects the sun heat. So be careful, don’t get lost and stay to late in this fascinating beauty, or the cold will get you at dusk…

This white sand is almost pure gypsum. Gypsum is different from many other rocks because it is readily soluble. This Gypsum comes from the surrounding mountain, and the rain dissolve the Gypsum to gathered it in ‘Lucero Basin’, in a shallow lake, which during the hottest months evaporates. A crust form on the lakebed and most of it form beautiful crystals called Selenite.

These crystals are extremely soft and fragile, the wind and the rain break them apart into smaller and smaller pieces, which soon become sand.

Buckskin gulch, Vermillon Cliffs, Az.

Buckskin Gulch is an area in Vermillon Cliffs, in North Arizona. We did this hike on a very nice day, it was around 90 degre temperature. Pretty hot. We got an incredible dark blue sky. But the most incredible was really the landscape, not very lush but stunning by the sandstone and the different tint and colors.
It was difficult to walk fast, beacause I wanted to photographed everything, and enjoy each different 'paysage', landscape, roch.

This hike is not a very difficult one, it takes about 3 hours to arrive to Paria/Wire Pass. It's very sandy, so you have to have good shoes to walk comfortably. and I really recommend you to wear pants! lots of spiny thistle, ouch!
After an hour, we just didn't pay to much attention but our legs looked like....hedgehog.

Before stopping for lunch we just took some time to take them off!

After a pretty long walk in the sun, we were really happy to reach the Paria Canyon and walked in the shade of the smooth beautiful rock.
It was slightly muddy, but nothing annoying.

This part of the hike was totally different from the beginning, and we like it as much!

We were happy to finally reach the crossing of paths, were we stop for lunch, and admired the petroglyphs

Petroglyphs were numerous in this area, include some more recent, with signature...

We didn't want to go back through the same way, so we took Wire Pass, which is much shorter, but again, amazing rocks and landscape!
This time, we even need to do some climbing because the paths between the canyon is extremely narrow, about shoulder width sometimes, and boulders are blocking the way. But nothing impossible!
Very pleasant hike.

And to finish the day we enjoyed our hotel, where we take some time enjoy the swimming pool and the Jacuzzi to relax our muscles, and be prepared for another hike the next day...

Vemillon Trip - Southwest- travel heart

Awesome trip in North Arizona! Vermillon Cliffs, north coyotte butte, the wave!
Talking about inspiration...wow! very few people there so we have been able to enjoy at the most.
And the south butte, well we were just our little group of 4! But I have to say that the wind was blowing at 35mph average....so rough condition, but stunning. Such a great trip!

For me the main interest is mostly before the show. I love to watch the preparation and everyone getting ready and verifying all the details, the kids are so proud and impatient as well as impressed.

The Cowboys tide their boots, prepare all their accessories to ensure the best grip, they pray and receive blessings before taking big risks!
My favorite part is definitely the Mutton Bustin. It's fun and also intense to watch these little kids tight to the sheep. Most of these junior cowboys are very young, between four and six years old. (How impressive it must be to ride a sheep bigger than you!)
They are holding the sheep with their arms and legs around the animal's body.

These kids are very serious about it and some even after rolling on the side, or even under the sheep most of them continue to hold tight, refusing to let go.

This makes me think of someone holding on to their dreams. Even if it's hard, even knowing that you'll fall, you'll get right back on, you'll do what it takes to realize your dreams.

I saw a rodeo live for the first time last year. It was very hard for me to understand why someone would take so much risk, to the point to risk his life.

I had the opportunity to talk and to spend some time with the cowboys, I used it to questions them. The rodeo is their dream, and it naturally became their life.

They had to live it fully. I realized that unless you are ready to give it your all, to go in the arena of life and experience, you will not come near your dream.

You might fall and get hurt but you must be willing to try again and again until you achieve your dream and live the life you've always wanted.

About 45 to 1 hour drive from Santa Fe, NM these mountains consist of a broadly circular ridge surrounding the Valles Caldera, a supervolcano, that shaped New Mexico and modify dramatically its environment between 1.1 and 1.4 million years ago. Leaving behind a group of mountains, canyons and mesas (mountain with flat top - Mesa is table in Spanish), these mountains are such opportunities for recreation outdoors activities.

In the Jemez, pretty much any outdoor activities are possible and so enjoyable. Mountain bike, horseback riding, hiking, fishing, hot springs.

And if you are not into outdoors activities, driving around and through the Valle Grande is just stunning! You are definitely going through so divers landscape. Many time it's just breathtaking! You could easily think that you are jumping from one state to another due to the change of environment in such short distance.

All seasons are enjoyable in this area. In the winter it's not always drivable! due to the snow condition on the road. But believe me if you get the opportunity to drive around in winter it is surrealist, and so beautiful! Then you can stop in the Jemez Village to get warm in the hot springs surrounded by stunning mountains views, or take some time to visit Jemez Monument, a 17th century mission ruins surrounded by Indian habitations.

Before returning you couldn't help to stop at the breathtaking area of Jemez Pueblo, where the native american held ceremonies and Pow wow. The red rocks are so stirring.

Whenever I pass by I can feel the power and history of these inspiring rocks, and I am always moved by the spirit of the mountains.

Here's another beautiful inspiring site to come visit in Santa Fe. Bandelier is a prehistoric site, origninaly created by a major Volcano, la Calderas, which is responsible for the majority of New Mexico Shape & Landscape. But mainly Bandelier is a major site about the Anasazi Indian, ancestors of Indian Pueblo.
Very inspiring, by it's landscape as well as by it's history.

My very favorite object was a pipe made by Argus Dowdy. An incredible Artist, passionate and dedicate to this beautiful art!

The Grand Canyon is evocative of grandiose landscapes and history (principally geological) and it reveals many treasures and mysteries. The Grand Canyon never ceases to impress, inspire and amaze.

It is an amazing experience to be on the brink of this abyss.

One is often speechless while admiring this immense space filled with a golden light that shifts and changes throughout the day, shining and reflecting on these ancient rocks.
This marvel of nature measures 277 miles in length along the river edge, 18 miles wide as the crow flies, and is the cradle of the Colorado River which flows 1 mile below. It is in such landscapes that numerous rafting trips take place, perfect to escape the extremely hot temperatures that prevail during the summer.
There are many wonderful viewing sites along the two rims, as well as a wealth of activities to explore the Canyon’s treasures, by foot, horseback, mules, helicopter or raft.
The two rims of this gigantic canyon (South and North) receive many visitors, and hotels and lodges, plus souvenir shops, are plentiful as well as geological, historical and artistic exhibits.

Contrary to some common beliefs on the geology of the Grand Canyon, it is not entirely an "open book."
For over a century, geologists have been studying these formations, and people still have questions about the origins, age, and actual formation of the Colorado River.
Gazing upon steep cliffs and a multitude of geological layers, you are contemplating two billion years of history and geological formations created at a time when no life form had yet APPEARED on earth! Difficult to imagine isn’t it?
For lovers of geology I recommend stopping by the 'Museum of Northern Arizona'.

In 1540 the Hopi Indians guided Spanish explorers to the south rim. In 1857 Lieutenant Joseph Ives discovered the Grand Canyon and acknowledged that: "The landscape promotes a wondering delight, but the region is, of course, altogether valueless. It can be approached only from the south, and after entering it there is nothing to do but leave. Ours has been the first, and will doubtless be the last, party of whites to visit this profitless locality".
How wrong he was! Each year there are millions of visitors (4.4 million in 2008), with one third of them coming from abroad to experience this natural wonder.

One of Santa Fe's landmark is the Loretto Chapel, with its 'miraculous staircase'.
This Chapel construction begun in 1873. It took 5 years to finish it (1878).
It has been fashioned from the St Chapelle in Paris. There is a significant french influence in Santa Fe, NM.
Even today there is many french artists, and french business taking an important place in the Capital of New Mexico.

Sedona, the red town, the spiritual town! Located in central Arizona and about two hours south of the Grand Canyon, Sedona is one of the jewels of the United States. Travelers discovering this city for the first time are really amazed.
Sedona is nestled in Oak Creek Canyon. Its richness resides in the red landscapes and high energy of its vortexes.
The rock formations shift their color shades from red coral, pink, golden brown, and burgundy depending on the time of the day. Colors are striking due to iron in the sandstone and limestone rock.
Some rocks are named after their shape: Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, Coffee Pot.
These extraordinary old red rocks, (1.8 billion years) are the result of sedimentation and erosion. Sedona has been completely covered by an ocean several times. It is not uncommon to find shells while hiking.

Some of these places are filled with a channeled and amplified energy. It is said to enhance meditation, prayer, visualization, inspiration and creativity. A place with this energy is called a 'Vortex'.
These vortexes or vortices remain a great mystery and are subject to many interpretations, both scientific and non scientific.
A generally accepted theory on the vortices is that they concentrate the magnetic fields of the earth’s energy. This magnetic energy is most probably due to the iron contained in these red rocks.

Other theories define a Vortex as a force from a dimension other than the one we live in, a parallel dimension if you will.
Whatever they are, these energies are strongly felt in our own dimension, when standing on a Vortex.

Everyone has a different experience, and nobody can predict what your experience will be! But don’t worry; very few negative experiences have ever been associated with these places.
